4 Blogging Strategies for Therapists to Boost your SEO and Attract More Clients

Welcome therapists and group practice owners! I’m Nicole McCance, a psychologist turned business coach for therapists. When I started my solo practice I thought growth was all about attracting new clients. But as I scaled to a multiple seven-figure group practice with 55 therapists (in only three years!) I realized that blogging isn’t just something that’s nice to have, it’s an essential element of successful digital marketing for therapists.

P.S. Not a huge fan of reading blogs? (I’m more of a podcast girl myself) You can listen to my podcast episode all about this topic by clicking here!

Blogging Strategies for Therapists: Why It’s a Game-Changer

If you’ve ever wondered how to get therapy clients consistently, blogging is a huge piece of the strategy. Blogging is an essential part of digital marketing for therapists and plays a critical role in boosting your search engine optimization (SEO). Here’s why it’s such a game-changer:

  • Boosting SEO: Blogs packed with relevant keywords tell Google you’re an authority in your niche. This will help your practice climb the search rankings and stay on top!
  • Attracting Therapy Clients: Potential clients are actively searching for answers to their problems (Hint: Here’s what potential therapy clients are searching in 2025). Blogging allows you to meet them where they’re at and position your practice as the solution. Because your practice IS the solution!
  • Long-Term ROI: Unlike paid ads that stop working when you stop paying, blogs build momentum over time. Once you rank, it’s hard to be knocked off the first page of Google. Sounds pretty great, right?

I’ll be honest with you, blogging isn’t going to produce immediate results. Results will take about six months to start seeing significant growth, but blogging is a sustainable and affordable therapy practice sales strategy.

4 Proven Blogging Strategies for Therapists

Here are my top four proven blogging strategies for therapists to make blogging work for you!

Use Themes from Your Therapy Sessions

As therapists, we have unparalleled access to the human psyche. Clients share their deepest struggles with us, which gives us insight into what people are truly searching for. Use this information to help determine your blog topics.

  • Pay attention to patterns in your sessions. Are many clients discussing topics like codependency, guilt or anxiety? These recurring themes make for powerful blog topics.
  • Utilize your downtime (like your office commute!) to brainstorm blog ideas. Record your thoughts using an app like Voxer and have your admin refine them into polished posts.

Blogging doesn’t have to be hard or overwhelming! By leveraging themes you’re already seeing in therapy, you’ll be able to create content that resonates deeply with your ideal clients.

Do Keyword Research

If you’re wondering how to get therapy clients through blogging, the secret lies in understanding what people are searching for online. Keyword research can guide you toward high-impact topics.

  • Action Step: Create a free Google Ads account and explore tools like Keyword Planner or Search Volume. These tools reveal how often specific terms like “EMDR therapy near me” are searched in your area.
  • Hot Tip: Not feeling very tech-savvy? Hand this task off to a digital marketing agency or a tech-savvy admin. (Here are more tasks you should be delegating to your admin!)

Understand Your Ideal Therapy Clients

Your ideal clients hold the key to your blogging success. Dive into your practice management software to uncover valuable data about them like:

  • Who are they? Look at information like age, location and the type of therapy they’re seeking.
  • What keeps them coming back? Identify clients who commit to full treatment plans or utilize multiple services like couples therapy or parenting sessions.

Once you know who you’re writing for, you can tailor your content to address their pain points and build trust and authority.

Target All Levels of Client Awareness

Not all potential clients are searching for things like “therapy near me”. Some are still trying to figure out what’s wrong or what solutions exist for them. To reach these potential therapy clients, create blogs that match their level of awareness.

  • Symptom-Aware: Address symptoms they may not associate with a deeper problem. For example, “why am I irritable all the time?”.
  • Problem-Aware: Write about common issues like “what is anxiety?” or “how to handle codependency.”
  • Solution-Aware: Educate your readers on therapy approaches and how they can help certain symptoms.
  • Practice-Aware: Share what makes your practice stand out from the rest! This includes things like your specialties, location or team.

By addressing different levels of awareness and meeting readers where they’re at, you’ll cast a wider net and connect with potential clients at every stage of their journey.

Blogging Strategies for Therapists: The 80/20 Rule

This tip is going to save you so much time! Focus on the 20% of your efforts that yield 80% of your results. For blogging, this means doubling down on the topics and strategies that resonate most with your audience. Use analytics tools, like those available in JaneApp (Click here to try it free for a month!), to track blog performance and refine your approach.
