Welcome therapists and group practice owners! I’m Nicole McCance, a psychologist turned business coach for therapists. When I first started using social media for my practice, I struggled with knowing how to truly connect with potential clients. But after learning the right strategies, I grew my coaching practice to nearly 50k engaged followers in just two years. Now, I’m here to help you do the same, because learning how to be successful on social media will help you attract the right clients, build trust and grow your practice in a way that feels authentic and sustainable.

Social Media is a Game-Changer for Therapists

If I’m being totally honest, when I was running my clinic, our social media presence was far from stellar. We weren’t consistent, our messaging wasn’t super clear and frankly, I didn’t know who I was speaking to.

But when I launched my therapy coaching business, I took a much different approach. Within two years, I built a highly engaged social media audience of nearly 50,000 followers and if you’re wondering what changed, it was my strategy.

If you want to learn how to get clients as a therapist and leverage social media for business growth, you need to approach it with intention. Here’s how you can do just that!

1. Know Your Audience and Niche Your Messaging

One of the things I did early on with social media was try to speak to everyone. Big mistake! When you try to reach everyone, you’re really reaching no one. Because for social media to work, your messaging needs to be clear and specific. Your audience needs to feel like you’re talking specifically to them. Here are some tips to help:

  • Define your audience: Are you speaking to anxious young professionals, new moms or couples struggling with communication? Get clear on who it is you specifically want to reach.
  • Identify the problem you solve: You’re a therapist, you’re a problem solver! Identify the biggest challenge your ideal client is facing and then address that problem in your content.
  • Create a niche package: Even if your practice is a one-stop shop, having a specialized offering that you talk about consistently helps with positioning and client attraction.

2. Be Consistent (Even If You Post Less Often)

I know what it’s like to feel the pressure to post consistently on social media, but consistency is KEY. That doesn’t mean you have to post daily (phew)! Determine a schedule that works for you and stick to it. Aim for 3-5 high-quality posts per week rather than sporadic, inconsistent content.

  • Mix it up: Share a combination of problem-aware posts (addressing your audience’s pain points), solution-aware posts (showing how therapy helps) and practice-aware posts (highlighting your team and services).
  • Engage regularly: Respond to comments, answer DMs and interact with your audience. This builds trust and strengthens your online presence!

3. Use Video to Build Connection

Some of you may not want to hear this (I’m sorry!) but if you’re wondering how to be successful on social media as a therapist, video content is one of the most powerful tools available. Clients want to know, like and trust you before they book!

  • Show your face: Short, engaging videos help potential clients feel connected to you before they even step into your office.
  • Feature your clinic and team: Give a virtual tour of your office, introduce new therapists or share behind-the-scenes content.
  • Share quick tips: Provide bite-sized insights on common client concerns (i.e. “3 ways to manage anxiety in the moment”).

4. Optimize Your Call to Action (CTA)

One of the biggest mistakes therapists make on social media is not having a clear CTA. Sure, you can post great content, but if you’re not guiding people to the next step, they won’t convert into clients. And unless you’re just using social media for the fun of it and aren’t trying to get more therapy clients, what’s the point?

  • Make booking easy: Posts and your bio should have a clear CTA. For example, “Tap the link in my bio for a free consultation” or “Tap the link in my bio to read my blog about how to manage anxiety in the moment.”.
  • Don’t overdo it: You don’t need a CTA in every single post, but you do need to include it strategically (2-3x per week) to drive inquiries.

5. Systemize and Delegate Your Social Media

If managing social media feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. In fact, you’re probably in the majority. The good news is that you don’t have to do it all on your own.

  • Create a content calendar: Plan your posts in advance so you’re not scrambling for content.
  • Use scheduling tools: Platforms like Later, Planoly or Meta Business Suite can automate posting so you don’t have to do it all on the fly.
  • Delegate to an admin: Have someone on your team create, schedule and manage posts so you can focus on your clients or managing your practice.

Social Media as a Long-Term Strategy for Therapists

Social media isn’t a quick fix for marketing. But when done right, it can help attract ideal clients, establish credibility and grow your practice sustainably. If you’re looking to learn how to get clients as a therapist and streamline your digital marketing, start by niching your messaging, showing up consistently and making it easy for clients to book with you.
