Welcome therapists and group practice owners! I’m Nicole McCance, a psychologist turned business coach for therapists. Not long ago, I was an overwhelmed solo practitioner seeing too many clients (like, way too many). When I became pregnant with my twins in 2016, I knew I had to make a change, which is what lead me to scaling to a group practice with 55 therapists and hitting multiple 7-figures in just three years!
There are three core principles that helped me grow a thriving group practice faster than I ever thought possible – Clarity, Commitment, and Consistency – and they’re the foundation behind everything I teach inside the Clinic Growth Map.
P.S. Not a huge fan of reading blogs? (I’m more of a podcast girl myself) You can listen to my podcast episode all about this topic by clicking here or by watching my YouTube video below!
The 3 Cs That Built My 7-Figure Group Practice
Clarity, Commitment, and Consistency. Write those down. These three principles are what separate successful group practice owners from those who stay stuck (seriously).
1. Clarity: Know Where You’re Going
You might think you’re clear because you’ve said “I want to start a group practice” or “I want to be fully booked”, but clarity means being exact. Clarity means knowing things like the exact revenue goal you’re working toward, how many therapists you want on your team, and what your ideal day-to-day looks like.
I’m being absolutely serious when I say that you should treat this like choosing a life partner. When I met my husband Dan, I had clarity that he was the one. In business, your clarity is choosing your big goal and sticking with it!
2. Commitment: Be All In
Clarity is great and all, but it means nothing without commitment. Commitment is the vow you make to yourself that this is happening. It’s deciding that no matter how hard it gets or how long it takes, you’re not turning back.
This is actually where most therapists get stuck. They know what they want (AKA: They have clarity), but they haven’t fully committed. They’re half-in, half-out, tempted by shiny side projects like podcasts, books, or online courses.
But the super honest truth is that you can have those things, but not yet. Commit to ONE thing. Scale your practice first, then the rest can follow.
3. Consistency: Show Up Daily (Even When It’s Boring)
I’ll be honest with you, this is the hardest part. Consistency is where dreams go to die because building something sustainable takes time, and it often feels like you’re putting in the work without seeing results. And honestly, that’s a total bummer.
Think of it like a boiling pot of water. For what feels like forever, nothing happens. But if you give up too soon, you’ll never reach the boil! Or when you’re planting a seed – you water it, you care for it, but it still looks like a pot of dirt until suddenly it sprouts.
Success happens in the moments you choose to keep going when it feels pointless.
Applying These Principles to Scale Your Group Practice
So, how do Clarity, Commitment, and Consistency actually show up in your daily business decisions? Glad you asked! Here’s some advice to help you apply these foundations to scale your group practice without all the overwhelm:
Say No More Often
Success isn’t just about what you say yes to. A large part of business success is actually what you say no to. Steve Jobs said it best: “Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.”
Many of my Clinic Growth Map members ask me if they should start a podcast, write a book, open a second location, etc. And do you want to know my answer?
Not until you’ve hit your revenue goal.
Before you chase the next big idea, pause for a minute and ask yourself:
- Will this take my focus away from my main goal?
- Will it make me money?
- Will it make me happy?
If the answer isn’t a very clear YES, it’s a no. The secret to my 7-figure success is that I did LESS. I focused and I showed up every single day.
So let this be your new mantra: Clarity. Commitment. Consistency. Foot on the gas. One direction. No side roads.
Simplify to Scale
Ok, now let’s talk about marketing.
You don’t need 10 different strategies, you need to double down on what’s actually working. Go back and ask yourself, “Where did my last five referrals come from?” and then do more of that.
Squeeze the juice out of what’s working before adding anything new.
The same advice goes for your business structure. Don’t open a second location until the first is running smoothly. Don’t add other modalities until your mental health team is dialed in. Adding complexity too soon will just slow you down!
Hot Tip: DM me on Instagram saying “MARKETING CALENDAR” and I’ll send you my FREE marketing calendar for therapists!
Think of your practice like a house you’re building. Some of you have left the construction site to go build a pool in the backyard. Yes, the pool is fun. But the house isn’t finished yet. Come back. Build the house first. Then swim.
Your Thriving Group Practice is Closer Than You Think
I know that sometimes it feels like you’re not making progress, but you are. The water is about to boil and those seeds are about to sprout! Just keep choosing your practice every single day, and amazing things will happen.
You’ve got this.
