Welcome therapists and group practice owners! I’m Nicole McCance, a psychologist turned business coach for therapists. Back when I was scaling my own practice, I learned something critical (and maybe a little surprising). One of the most powerful marketing tools isn’t what you post on social media or how often you blog, it’s your website.
In this blog article, I’m sharing the essential website upgrades that helped me scale to 55 therapists and multiple 7-figures in just 3 years. And you’ll learn how to use these same tips to keep client inquiries coming in, even during the dreaded summer slump.
P.S. Not a huge fan of reading blogs? (I’m more of a podcast girl myself) You can listen to my podcast episode all about this topic by clicking here!
Do You Actually Like Your Website?
I’m going to start with a tough question. Be honest, do you actually LIKE your website?
Let me help you out a bit more. When someone asks for your website, are you excited to share it? Or do you hesitate a little bit?
So many therapists settle when it comes to their website. It might be outdated, wordy, generic, or filled with empty couches and beach stock photos. I know you know exactly what I’m talking about.
But the reality is that your website is your first impression. Think of it like your virtual handshake. If it doesn’t clearly communicate who you help, how you help them, and how to get started, you’re losing potential therapy clients.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, a bad website is like a bad haircut. You may not realize how off it is until someone points it out. (And yes.. I’ve given my kids some terrible haircuts. It happens. But websites, those can be fixed!)
Hot Tip: Watch my video below, where I dive deep into explaining how to fix your website to boost conversions!
Why Summer Is the Best Time to Upgrade Your Website
I totally get that summer can feel slower. But I want you to think of it as a gift, because now you can use this time to:
- Audit your current website
- Fix what isn’t working
- Prep for a fall influx of clients
You might be running Google Ads, boosting posts, or doing outreach, but if you’re sending people to a website that doesn’t convert? That’s a leaky bucket. And obviously, we don’t want that!
When I finally invested in redesigning my website, my Google Ads manager emailed me and said, “What did you DO!? Your conversion rate is through the roof!” Which definitely made me wish I had made these changes sooner.
5 Website Changes That Can Seriously Boost Conversions
I have some good news for you. These website changes aren’t difficult! You can even do most of these changes right now if you wanted to.
Hot Tip: Send me a DM on Instagram with the word “WEBSITE” + I’ll send you a link to my FREE guide: 8 Steps to a High Converting Specialty Page.
1. Happy Faces, Not Sad Ones
Therapists are trained to empathize. We want people to land on our website and feel seen. But showing sad, distressed people isn’t what makes some click “Book Now”.
Research shows that happy faces are 30-50% more clickable! This is because they show where clients are going, not where they are.
2. No More Empty Couches
I know the industry trend, but showcasing a bunch of photos of empty rooms or couches doesn’t say “people love coming here”, it says the opposite. Clients want to feel hope and connection, not sterile furniture!
3. Use Consistent Calls to Action
Pick one phrase (I recommend “Book Now” or “Book an Appointment”) and use it everywhere. And when I say “everywhere”, I meant it. I’m talking in the navigation bar, in bios, and on every service page. Don’t make people guess how to work with you!
4. Let People Book Themselves
Most clients book appointments after 7pm. If your site doesn’t allow online booking, there’s a good chance that you’re losing people. I always recommend JaneApp because you can brand your booking page and include therapist photos, bios, and real-time availability.

5. Ditch the Paragraphs
I’m going to be real with you, nobody wants to read a novel. Keep your content scannable! Think short sentences, headers, icons, and visuals. People scroll websites the same way they scroll Instagram, quickly. So you should make it as easy as possible for them.
What Should Your Therapy Website Actually Include?
I recommend using this simple formula:
- What problem do you solve?
- How do you help?
- How can they get started?
This structure should guide your homepage, speciality pages, and bios. For example, if you offer EMDR, don’t just send people to your homepage from an ad. Create a dedicated EMDR page that covers:
- What EMDR is
- How it helps
- Who it helps
- How to book a session with your team
Building a Team Page That Builds Trust
Finally, you need a strong team page. If you want clients to book with your therapists (not just you), make it easy:
- Use consistent headshots
- Include bios that speak directly to client pain points
- Add a “Book Now” button under every profile
This makes it seamless for a client to find someone who fits their needs and take the next step!
Your Website is a Sales Tool, Not a Brochure
If you’re running ads, boosting posts, or sending people to your site from Psychology Today, make sure your website is actually built to convert. Otherwise, all that time and money is leaking right out the bucket.
If you’re ready to finally have a website that attracts the right clients (even during the slow season), I have a free gift for you!
Just DM me the word “WEBSITE” on Instagram and I’ll send you my 8-step formula for building a high-converting specialty page. This is the exact framework we give our coaching clients to turn “meh” websites into consistent lead generators.
You don’t have to settle for a site you avoid sharing. With a few intentional changes, your website can become your most powerful marketing tool.
