Mastering Money Decisions as an Entrepreneur Therapist

Welcome therapists and group practice owners! I’m Nicole McCance, a psychologist turned business coach for therapists. I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel when you’re balancing clinical work, managing a business, and trying to make confident money decisions at the same time. When I scaled my solo practice to a thriving group practice with 55 therapists and multiple 7-figures in just three years, learning how to master money decisions was one of the biggest turning points for me.

If you’re an entrepreneur therapist or group practice owner who is feeling stuck, fearful of investing, or unsure how to make smarter financial choices, your business bestie is here to help! In this article I’m going to go over how to master money decisions so you can grow your practice with confidence and freedom.

P.S. Not a huge fan of reading blogs? (I’m more of a podcast girl myself) You can listen to my podcast episode all about this topic by clicking here!

The Connection Between Emotions and Money

Money is so much more than numbers. It’s emotional! For many therapists, our money stories are rooted in scarcity, fear, or control. And when you’re building a business, those emotions can cloud your judgement.

As an entrepreneur therapist, understanding the emotional side of money is super important. But even more important is learning how to make decisions based on logic instead of fear.

One truth that is sometimes hard to come to terms with is that it takes money to make money.

Whether it’s investing in a larger office space, hiring an admin, running Google ads, or working with a business coach, growth requires investment. Holding onto every dollar because of fear only slows down your momentum (which of course, we don’t want!). And if you’re not willing to invest in your practice, how can you expect clients to invest in you?

A New Way to Approach Money Decisions

If you’re serious about growing your practice, you need a system (you know how much I love systems!), not just gut feelings, to guide your financial choices.

Here’s a simple, powerful tool I use when coaching clients in the Clinic Growth Map: the Cost-Benefit Analysis.

Here’s what I want you to do:

  1. Grab a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle.
  2. On the left side, list the COSTS of a decision (loan payments, office rent, new software expenses).
  3. On the right side, list the BENEFITS (new client revenue, freedom, time with family, ability to scale).

This exercise is going to help you:

  • Get clear on the real risks and rewards.
  • Feel more confident in taking calculated risks.
  • See your business opportunities more objectively.

This strategy is a game-changer for entrepreneur therapists because it moves you out of “emotional decision more” and into “CEO decision mode”.

Hot Tip: If you want to dive deeper into how to use cost-benefit analysis to make smarter money decisions, DM me the word “Clarity” on Instagram (@nicole.mccancemethod) and I’ll send you a short video that breaks it all down.

You’re Sitting on a Gold Mine

It’s true! One of the biggest “aha” moments I had when scaling was realizing that my practice was a gold mine…if I fed it properly.

Instead of hoarding my money or playing small, I learned to strategically invest. And guess what? One therapy room can bring in around $40,000/year! One part-time therapist can generate $10,000/month in revenue. Yes, seriously.

You just need to get clear on how to nurture your practice in a way that can give you massive freedom – not only financially, but in your time, energy, and the legacy you’re building.

(Psst. If talking about money like this makes you uncomfortable, you should check out this post on Instagram!)

What If You Don’t Have Extra Money Right Now?

I totally get it. I’ve been in this position too! When I first started my solo practice, I didn’t have savings. I took out a loan and it was terrifying. But that’s why the key is doing it strategically.

Before making a big investment (i.e. moving to a bigger office or hiring a team member) ask yourself these questions:

  • What’s my monthly cost?
  • How long will it take to break even?
  • Can I supplement in the meantime by seeing more clients if needed?

Remember, as an entrepreneur therapist, you’re in a very unique position. Unlike many industries, you can generate cash flow quickly by simply booking more sessions while you build your dream practice!

Scale Your Practice with Confidence and Ease

Mastering money decisions isn’t about letting go of fear completely. But it does require being informed and intentional about the money decisions being made.

If you only take one thing away from this blog article, let it be this: Your dream life is already possible. You just need a clear plan and the courage to take the next step!

Being an entrepreneur therapist is a wild, beautiful journey. And you don’t have to figure it out all on your own.
