SEO for Therapists in the AI Era: How to Get Found on Google, Gemini, and ChatGPT

Welcome therapists and group practice owners! I’m Nicole McCance, a psychologist turned business coach for therapists. I recently sat down with Chris Morin, an SEO expert for therapists and founder of Moonraker AI, on the Business Savvy Therapist podcast to talk about how search is changing in the AI era. What he shared was so valuable that I wanted to break down the key takeaways here, because SEO for therapists looks very different than it did even a year ago.

With AI tools like Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity becoming the default way people search, the rules have shifted, but the good news is that the changes actually play to your strengths as a real, credentialed professional.

P.S. Not a huge fan of reading blogs? (I’m more of a podcast girl myself.) You can listen to my podcast episode all about this topic by clicking here

Why Content Alone Won't Help You Rank Anymore

Chris explained something that really stuck with me. He said the era when content alone was a differentiator is over.

With AI, anyone can generate thousands of perfectly written blog posts in hours. A brand new website could be built to look like the most credible EMDR practice in any city, and it would be flawless down to the last period.

Google and AI platforms are now asking a deeper question: what’s real and what’s just noise?

Chris calls most AI-generated content “AI slop,” and Google’s entire mission right now is separating legitimate providers from that noise. As a real person with real credentials running a real practice, you already have the advantage! You just need to make it obvious to the search engines.

How to Prove Your Practice Is Real (and Why AI Needs You To)

Chris broke this into three categories AI systems evaluate when deciding whether to recommend you.

Ground Your Website to a Real Business

AI needs to see that your website is connected to a real practice.

This means:

  • Having a verified Google Business Profile
  • Consistent business information across your online listings
  • Connected social media profiles
  • A paid Google Workspace account tied to your domain (Bots don’t put credit cards on file, so this simple step really signals legitimacy)

Make Your Credentials Verifiable

It’s no longer enough to list your credentials on your website (sorry!). You need to prove them.

Chris shared an example of a therapist in Austin who was ranking well for couples therapy but getting zero traction for sex therapy because there wasn’t a single verifiable piece of evidence showing she was ASECT certified.

Here’s what verifiable looks like:

  • Link your license number to your state or provincial licensing board’s verification page
  • Link to your NPI database entry (in the U.S.)
  • Connect to your EMDRIA profile, Psychology Today listing, or other professional directories
  • Include images of your diplomas and certifications directly on your bio page

The goal is to organize everything so AI doesn’t have to go searching for proof. As Chris put it, you’re serving it up on a silver platter (and that saves these systems time and energy, which they value).

Build a Reputation AI Can Trust

Chris emphasized that professional endorsements from peers can be just as powerful as client reviews, especially since therapists face ethical challenges around asking for client reviews.

The key is making endorsements verifiable.

If a colleague writes a testimonial for your website, link it to their Psychology Today profile, their practice website, or their LinkedIn. A quote without a source is just a story to AI, but a quote linked to a real, verifiable professional carries real weight.

Why Your Therapist Bio Page Is Now Your Most Important SEO Asset

Chris said most therapists have “pretty atrocious bio pages” that read like a personal story rather than a verifiable professional profile. (If this sounds like your page, don’t let it get you down! You’re truly not the only one, and it can easily be fixed)

The story is great for connecting with potential clients, but AI needs data.

Think of your bio page more like an interactive CV.

  • Keep your headshot and warm personal introduction at the top
  • Then go deeper with a chronological education section (with diploma images)
  • Add a credentials section with “verify my license” buttons linking to official databases
  • Keep your training and certifications linked to the programs or your directory profiles

Chris reassured me that this actually looks good when it’s done well.

When the credentials section is organized properly, it feels supportive of your brand. If your list of CE courses is getting long, you could create a separate CV page on your site. Just make sure the links are crawlable by AI so that information is working for you.

Hot Tip: Test this by dropping the page link into ChatGPT and asking it to summarize your credentials!

How AI Search Is Changing the Way Clients Find Therapists

The biggest takeaway from my conversation with Chris is that AI search isn’t coming, it’s already here. Within the next year, the traditional Google search experience with ten blue links will likely be replaced by conversational AI across over a billion devices worldwide.

Potential clients aren’t typing “anxiety therapist Toronto” anymore. They’re having full conversations, saying things like, “I’ve been struggling with my relationship and I think I need couples counseling. Do you know anyone good in my area?” And if AI trusts you based on the evidence you’ve built, you’ll be the one it recommends. (I’ve experienced this myself, and it’s pretty amazing.)

The client journey is also getting compressed. Someone who starts with “what is trauma?” can move to “find me an EMDR therapist nearby” in the same conversation because AI already knows their context.

Hot Tip: Want to see how you show up in AI search? Open ChatGPT or Gemini and ask, “Who’s the best [your specialty] therapist in [your city]?” If you’re not showing up, start building out the strategies in this post. And check out my podcast episode all about optimizing your therapy website!

Your Digital Footprint Is Your New Referral Network

SEO for therapists in the AI era comes down to proving you’re a real, credentialed professional with a strong reputation.

The therapists who build verifiable, well-organized digital footprints are the ones AI will confidently recommend, and that foundation becomes a permanent asset that keeps working for you.

Start with your bio page this week, make your credentials verifiable, and ask a colleague for a professional endorsement and link it to their real profiles. These changes don’t require a big budget, but they can make a huge difference in how AI sees your practice.
