The Riches Are in the Niches: How Niche Therapy Packages Can Help You Stand Out

Welcome, therapists and group practice owners! I’m Nicole McCance, a psychologist turned business coach for therapists. I know how frustrating it is to watch your practice get lost in a sea of competition. If you’re struggling to stand out and attract your ideal clients, this post is for you.

The key to success isn’t being a jack-of-all-trades—it’s about niching down and getting clear on your unique offerings. I’m here to help you navigate the pros and cons of niching, how to get more therapy clients, how to make more money as a therapist, and how you can build a multi-seven-figure business with these strategies exactly like I did.

P.S. Not a huge fan of reading blogs? (I’m more of a podcast girl myself.) You can listen to my podcast episode all about this topic by clicking here!

Being Known vs. Niching: What's the Difference?

When I started out, I wasn’t fully niche, but I was definitely known for something. I ran the Toronto Neurofeedback and Psychotherapy Center, and while we offered a broad range of therapies, we were most famous for neurofeedback, a specialized form of brain training. Being known for something is a huge asset in a sea of therapists because it helps you stand out from the crowd.

I chose to run my clinic as a one stop shop and not niche my clinic so that we were able to serve multiple populations. Being known for something like neurofeedback helped me pull people in but we still offered all of the things so I wasn’t forced to refer out and lose revenue.

The Pros of Niching

Let’s say you decide that niching is the right choice for your clinic, there are definitely pros to niching–here are a few:

1. You Become the Expert:

  • Focus on a specific niche and position yourself as the go-to expert.
  • Clients are more likely to seek you out for your specialized knowledge and experience.
  • Your credibility and authority grow as you specialize in solving specific problems.

2. Higher Conversion Rate:

  • Tailored offerings increase your chances of converting leads into clients.
  • People are more likely to choose you if they see you specialize in solving their exact problem.
  • Niche services attract highly motivated clients who already align with your expertise.

3. Stand Out from the Crowd:

  • Niching helps you break free from the sea of generalist therapists.
  • Clients will remember you for your specialized services.
  • You’ll be easily identifiable as the therapist focused on their specific needs (e.g., ADHD, trauma, couples therapy).

4. Your Google Ad Lead Cost is Typically Cheaper:

  • Niching targets specific, less competitive keywords on Google Ads.
  • Lower cost-per-click means your marketing budget goes further.
  • You’re not wasting money bidding on broad or highly competitive search terms.

The Cons of Niching

While niching can be incredibly powerful, it’s important to acknowledge that there are some potential downsides to consider. Before you fully commit, let’s take a closer look at a few challenges that might come with focusing your practice on a specific niche:

1. Limited Client Base

  • A niche targets a specific group, which can be great for marketing but limits your potential clients.
  • If demand shifts, you could be left with fewer clients.

2. Increased Vulnerability to Market Changes

  • Example: A motor vehicle accident therapist could face challenges if insurance policies suddenly change.
  • In 2010, my practice took a hit when there was an insurance change and overnight I stopped getting referrals.

3. Referring Out to Other Specialists

  • A specialized practice may require more referrals to colleagues for other needs (e.g., marital therapy if you’re only doing trauma).
  • While not always bad, it can feel limiting.

4. Harder to Recruit

  • Niche practices are harder to scale.
  • Recruiting therapists with the right expertise can be challenging, slowing down growth.

How Creating Niche Therapy Packages Can Attract Clients

Here’s the thing: You don’t have to niche your entire practice to benefit from the advantages of niching. Instead, you can create niche therapy packages that attract clients while still offering a variety of services under your umbrella.

This is exactly what I did: I developed a 10-week ADHD brain training program, combining different modalities and populations. In Ontario, where regulations are strict, we can’t pre-bill or sell packages upfront like in other regions. So, I structured the program with 30 sessions over 10 weeks, billing after each session to comply with the rules. This approach allowed me to offer a structured, niche service.

The beauty of niche therapy packages is that you’re already doing the therapy—you’re just packaging it in a way that helps you stand out.

How to Create a Niche Package

Creating a niche therapy program isn’t as hard as it sounds. It’s a matter of thinking about your ideal clients, your most popular modalities, and combining them in a unique, structured way. Here’s what I did:

1. Identify Your Niche Therapy Modality

  • Determine which therapy modality brings you the most success and satisfaction (e.g., EMDR, IFS, CBT).
  • Combine your favorite modality with another for a unique approach (e.g., CBT + IFS, Exposure Therapy + ACT).
  • Offering something unique will help you stand out from the crowd and clients will feel that their treatment is personalized and tailored to their needs.

2. Define the Client You Want to Attract

  • Identify your target market (e.g., parents of children with ADHD).
  • Market your niche program as a comprehensive solution.
  • Focus on the specific problem your program solves (e.g., self-harm, birth trauma, infidelity).

3. Market and Package

  • Once your niche program is designed, market it as a structured package, not just regular sessions.
  • Include additional elements like follow-up emails, weekly check-ins, and materials/homework to ensure progress.

Ready to Transform Your Practice?

If you’re wondering how to get more therapy clients and how to make more money as a therapist, the answer often starts with one powerful move: choosing a niche. Niching doesn’t mean boxing yourself in—it means standing out. It’s how you attract the right clients, scale with intention, and build a practice that offers both freedom and long-term success. With a bit of creativity and strategic planning, you can design a business that truly supports the life you want.
