Why Every Therapist Should Talk to a Business Coach Before Scaling Their Practice

Welcome therapists and group practice owners. I’m Nicole McCance, a psychologist turned business coach for therapists. I scaled my group practice to 55 therapists and multiple 7 figures in three years with toddler twins at home, but I did not do it alone. At every stage of growth, I leaned on mentors, coaches and people who had already done what I was trying to do.

That support is truly one of the biggest reasons I grew quickly without the burnout spiral so many therapists fall into.

I want to share why talking to a business coach is one of the smartest steps you can take when you are thinking about growing your practice. Whether you are a full solo practice wondering what comes next or already leading a team, getting clarity from someone who understands this industry seriously makes scaling so much easier.

P.S. Not a huge fan of reading blogs? (I’m more of a podcast girl myself) You can listen to my podcast episode all about this topic by clicking here!

Why Therapists Need Outside Support When Growing a Practic

If you’re a therapist, you already know that we didn’t learn anything about business in graduate school. None of us were taught essential skills like:

  • how to structure a team
  • how to market a private practice
  • how to hire and lead
  • how to make financial decisions
  • how to scale sustainably

So when therapists (AKA most of us) try to figure it all out alone, you often end up sitting in confusion and overwhelm. But it’s not that you aren’t intelligent or aren’t capable. It’s just that you haven’t been exposed, and simply have not seen this done before.

Talking to a business coach specifically in this industry gives you something most therapists don’t have in their day to day life: someone who understands your goals, your fears and the path you’re trying to walk.

Most therapists I speak with feel some version of:

  • I’m scared to make a wrong decision
  • I don’t know where to start
  • My partner wants to support me but does not know what to say
  • I feel isolated
  • I want to work less and make more, but I can’t see the steps

But a single conversation with someone who actually gets it can cut through all of that.

Because growth requires clarity and clarity is almost impossible to create alone (trust me).

Why Therapists Need Outside Support When Growing a Practic

If you’ve never had a business coach before, it can feel a bit intimidating at first. But the goal is truly simple. They’re here to help you understand where you are, where you want to go and what the next step should be.

Here are the biggest benefits therapists walk away with when they speak to someone about scaling their practice.

1. Immediate clarity and direction

Most therapists are trying to hole a billion ideas in their heads at once. Trust me when I say I know this feeling deeply, I’ve been there.

Your head is swarming with questions like should I hire? Should I raise my rates? Should I switch software? Should I redo my website? Should I invest in ads?

A business coach helps you sort through the noise and identify your real starting point. After one conversation, many therapists say:

“I finally know what step one is.”
“I thought I needed ten things, but I really only need two.”
“I feel less overwhelmed and more grounded.”

It doesn’t have to be as scary and complicated as it feels, because scaling becomes much easier the moment you know what matters now and what can wait.

2. A safe space to talk about the parts no one else understands

Business conversations feel lonely when the people in your life aren’t entrepreneurs. If you do have this in your life, you’re more steps ahead than most!

For example, your partner may want to support you but doesn’t understand the demands of private practice. Your friends listening to you talk about caseload, marketing or payroll will glaze over.

But a business coach becomes the person you can talk to openly. Nothing is off the table. You can bring:

  • fears
  • money questions
  • messy websites
  • hiring struggles
  • imposter syndrome
  • uncertainty about the next level

Basically, you finally get to say out loud the things you have been holding inside. And trust me… that alone is relief.

3. Support with mindset blocks that slow your growth

One of the biggest surprises therapists experience is how deeply mindset affects business growth. And if you know me, you know how important I believe mindset is when scaling your practice.

Common mindset blocks that therapists experience include:

  • scarcity fears
  • guilt around earning more
  • fear of stepping into leadership
  • doubt about hiring a team
  • not believing they can work less and earn more

A business coach sees these patterns instantly because we hear them from thousands of therapists. When someone reflects your mindset back to you and gives you a path through it, you start to see things more clearly.

I genuinely believe that growth starts internally before it ever shows up on your numbers.

4. Practical feedback on the pieces that actually matter

A great coach will look at the tangible pieces of your practice and help you improve them quickly. Therapists often walk away from these conversations with:

  • a website audit
  • simple marketing steps
  • guidance on job postings
  • clarity on what to delegate
  • steps to clean up systems
  • ideas for lead generation
  • a plan to reduce overwhelm

Because sometimes the most powerful thing is someone saying “Do this one thing today,” and suddenly a problem you’ve literally sat on for months is solved in hours.

5. Confidence to take the next right step

Keep reading, because this is what matters most.

When you speak to someone who has seen over a thousand therapists grow, who knows the patterns, who understands the fears and who believes in your potential, you walk away feeling something so many owners forget:

I CAN DO THIS! (It’s true)

Scaling your practice becomes less scary when someone is in your corner reminding you that your goals are possible and showing you a path that fits your life, not someone else’s.
